Abstract |
Polyolefins, polymers and copolymers of ethylene and propylene, accounts for a major part of all commercial thermoplastics. The usefulness of polyolefins is severely limited by degradation reactions which normally occur when such polymers are exposed to oxygen. Degradation is accelerated by heat and UV-light, and will lead to embrittlement of the polymer. The lecture described degradation of the different polyolefins, and stabilisation system used to reduce the degradation speed and thereby controlling the process - and end use stability. Benefits and drawbacks of commercial antioxidants were also described, and also the methods used to design the wanted process - and long term heat stability |
